Itinerary
Your holiday begins today as you arrive independently in the cathedral city of Salisbury and make your way to our charming Georgian hotel. The Mercure White Hart Salisbury is conveniently located in the heart of the city, a short distance from the renowned Salisbury Cathedral.
After checking in or leaving your bags at the hotel, there's time to get to know the city at leisure. The parkland surrounding the cathedral (known as Cathedral Close) houses attractions such as the 18th-century Mompesson House, which featured in the 1995 film adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. Amongst the city's timeless streets, you'll find a marketplace, quirky shops and Fisherton Mill, a large independent art gallery.
Return to the hotel to meet the Tour Manager and group and enjoy a welcome glass of prosecco before our first three-course dinner in the hotel restaurant.

The East Somerset Railway* is a broad gauge 1.8 mile (2.9 km) heritage railway in Somerset, which runs between Cranmore station and Mendip Vale. The railway opened in 1858 and the first train was hauled by a classically named engine called Homer. The line was converted to standard gauge in 1874 and in 1878 the Great Western Railway joined the East Somerset line with the Cheddar Valley line to Wells.
The Swindon and Cricklade Railway* is a heritage railway in Wiltshire, England, that operates on a short section of the old Midland and South Western Junction Railway line between Swindon and Cricklade in Wiltshire. The tiny steam train has a cheerful red and green engine, and its round trip journey starts and ends at Blunsdon Railway Station.

This was a superb trip. The hotel was fabulous (the air-conditioning was much appreciated during our latest heatwave), the staff were all extremely professional and friendly and the food was amazing. All the visits were enjoyed by everyone, the highlight for me was being able to stand in the inner circle at Stonehenge at sunset on a private visit once the "tourists" had all gone. Everything ran extremely smoothly and our Tour Manager, Bridged, was one of the best we've come across (totally unflappable and with lots of knowledge of the local area). I do, however, feel that the meal at Avebury was definitely surplus to requirements - a sandwich would have been enough for most of us as with breakfast, lunch and dinner there was a tremendous amount of food wastage. It was a pity that the powers that be at Stonehenge didn't keep the visitor centre open for an extra hour for us as promised but that was not the fault of GRJ. Our coach driver, Lee, was a fount of knowledge about the area and an excellent driver. All in all I would highly recommend this tour.

Unfortunately, due to a family situation that we needed to urgently get home for, we only experienced 48 hours of the planned six day holiday. However, during that time, we enjoyed a fabulous and informative two days, visiting The Wiltshire Museum, The 'haunted' Red Lion Pub and Avebury. The guides in the museum and at Avebury were extremely knowledgeable and made the events interesting. Jenny, our lovely tour manager, was always with us and available and on hand to answer any queries or questions, Lee, our lovely coach driver, was very informative and charismatic, and we were getting to know more about our small group of just fourteen. Additionally, the hotel staff were all really friendly and helpful. The communication from the Great Rail Journeys and from Jenny was excellent throughout. Due to our early departure from the holiday, we didn't get to visit Stonehenge, which has been on my bucket list for a few decades, and we missed out on the two steam train rides, which my husband was really excited about, so we are going to book this holiday again, and all being well we'll stay for the duration next time!

very good itinerary with a mix of days out. Only one cause for concern was the guide at the Swindon Steam museum taking too long leaving no time to view the exhibits. A guide was not required.
