Brienz Rothorn Railway

Generations of innovation and care pair with timeless scenes of the Swiss Alps aboard the Brienz Rothorn Railway. Located on the shores of Lake Brienz in the Bernese Oberland, the cog railway opened in 1892 after just two short years of construction.

Through emerald-hued forests, across wide-open meadows, and high above the stunning turquoise waters of Lake Brienz, the Brienz Rothorn Railway has captured the attention and hearts of riders since its reopening more than 90 years ago. While many heritage rail lines converted to diesel power in the 1930s and 1940s, this railway retained its antique charm by using steam engines - a fact that holds to this day. The course remains the same - an incredibly scenic rack and pinion line of just under 5 miles.

Over 690 mountain peaks are visible from the top, as are Lakes Thun and Brienz and the villages of the Bernese Oberland. Hiking trailheads extend down the mountainside from the summit. Visitors desiring a different perspective can travel back down by cable car rather than reboarding the train.

The journey down the mountain is just as scenic, allowing guests to drink in the scenery once more at a slow and steady pace. While the railway's setting gets the credit for the views, the carriages' open-concept design allows it to be seen from all angles. Long benches span the cars' width and provide plenty of seating for guests.

The Brienz Rothorn Railway operates from June to October each year. Its significant history and majestic scenery make this rail line a Swiss treasure.
